As a caregiver for your spouse or elderly parent, you have taken on or have been placed in the role of supporting another person. Some people are natural caregivers, others learn as they go along. Some of us grow into the role of caregiver, while others experience a feeling
that they are not really caregivers (as individuals) and have additional challenges.
What are your needs as a caregiver? Are you a new caregiver struggling to learn the role and all that is involved? Or are a longtime caregiver experiencing caregiver fatigue?
Are you the "sandwich generation"? ... feeling the pull between the needs of your children and parents. Or are you what I call the "club sandwich generation"? ... feeling the pressure of providing support to your parents, children and grandchildren? Where do you fit into this equation?
Prolonged periods of caregiver stress without adequate support can lead to caregiver burnout. Are you at risk? Do you put all or energy into being a caregiver without thinking of yourself? Do you neglect your own needs or health?
Being a "distance caregiver" brings unique challenges and stresses. What tools are you able to access to help you and your loved one?
I provide services to caregivers whether locally or remotely for those at a distance. I provide support and counselling, and can be consultated to design concrete action plans for "self-care" and "care for the care giver". I facilitate difficult conversations around the family's role in caring for elders, including those with dementia.
